Lagos is a free Lightroom summer preset that photographer Eugene Zhyvchik designed to bring out the distinct look and feel of Lagos, Portugal. He based the aesthetic on his extensive travel experience.
Lagos works best on photos taken under diffused natural lighting, especially of beaches, scenery, and vacation spots. The preset is, after all, created for travel photos. We selected the example photos below to demonstrate what every adjustment does to your images.
What we love about his preset is that you can have a film-like aesthetic. It is light, elegant, and sophisticated. Everything still looks natural. Nothing is overdone.
The best part is that you can use the preset’s motif to define a style and set a cohesive look. This is great if you have multiple photos to upload or print, and if you want to make your Instagram feed look consistent. If you need a travel filter with unstated elegance, Lagos is the one to go for.
Creates a Warm and Inviting Summer Look
Classic Warmth. To visually create the warm atmosphere of Lagos, the preset warms the color temperature and moderately adds more magenta tint. These two combine to create a somewhat vintage haze throughout the photo. Add some tonal refinements (more on this later on) and you get the classic matte style often associated with analog photography.
The preset defines its motif further in the HSL panel, and by applying custom camera calibration settings. We can, as a result, easily notice how the sky and water look more inviting in aqua. The warm areas, like the beach, look richer with added orange hues.
Produces Light Tones for a Relaxed Vacation Atmosphere
Light and Airy. Lagos preset mellows down the intensity of colors and light regions for an elegant airy effect. This complements its color aesthetic and complex warm tones. Because of this setting, you can also be sure that you don’t get overblown highlights. In the After photo, for example, the sky looks soft even with the brightened scene.
Gentle Shadows. The soft tones of this summer preset make it ideal for portraits. It also softens shadows and blacks. Not only does this make a more consistent look, but it also removes unwanted harsh shadows throughout the photograph.
This adjustment is especially useful when taking portraits. As you can see in the example above, the preset took out the shadows on the woman’s face. We love how her face is now more illuminated, and we get to appreciate more of her features and expression.
Reveals Textures of Beaches and Coasts
Soft yet Textured. We love how the preset keeps a lot of detail even with its softened tones. You can notice more textures in the photo once Lagos is applied. The preset, after all, amplifies texture and sharpening levels. It also enhances surface definition further by also increasing the clarity of midtones.
You can notice the effect the most on rock formations, beach sand, and ocean waves. Try to compare the details in the example above: examine the rocks, the coastline, and the overall coarser look.
