Creates a Dim but Cozy Atmosphere
Tender Light. Unlike most dark presets, Hideaway makes photos look inviting instead of eerie or ominous. It has a comforting feel. The style is reminiscent of those moments in a quaint café while the weather is overcast or altogether gloomy.
To create this look, the preset first dims the scene by lowering exposure and softening light regions. As you can observe in the After photo above, it is as though Hideaway generally decreases the amount of light. It even accentuates this effect by adding a light gray tint to the highlights.
The preset also lightens the darks regions to create a gentle look and feel. Given the decrease in light, too, the adjustment makes sure that no shadow would appear harsh. Hideaway refines all these tonal settings in the tone curve as well.
Produces Clear, Unsaturated, Tones
Elegant Hues. Even with the dimming, the preset retains much depth and definition. It keeps things looking natural despite the lowered light levels; it expertly blends its contrast, clarity, and saturation settings.
While Hideaway amplifies clarity and contrast, it desaturates all colors. Every hue is pulled towards grays but does not look washed out. The midtones, as you can see in the After photo, keep all elements clear and crisp. Take a look at the brick wall, the menu board, and the round table. See how you can still detect depth even with the overarching dark motif.
Lightens Warm Colors
Cozy Warmth. The preset subdues warm hues to maintain its dim, understated, aesthetic. It does most of it under Lightroom’s HSL panel. First, it narrows the range of warm tones to make them lighter: it pulls red hues to orange, and orange to yellow. Second, the preset illuminates yellows by increasing their luminance levels. As a result, warm lights would become neutral, like the lightbulbs in the After photo above. Finally, to complete the welcoming feel, Hideaway desaturates all warm colors as well.
Softens Cool Hues
Serene Tones. The preset adjust cool hues similarly as well. It desaturates them and adds brilliance by increasing the luminance of blue tones. What makes the preset even more special is how it intricately blends these color settings.
As you can see in the example above, these combine beautifully with the now-nuanced gray tones. Examine the skin tones, the white table, and the ceramic mugs. Notice how dim the scene looks yet these elements retain a certain luster. They look vividly defined, too. With the Hideaway preset, you consistently get the dim, soft, tones without compromising details.
