B&W Orange Filter free Lightroom preset that transforms colored images to high-contrast black and white. It replicates the look of a photo shot using an analog camera fitted with an orange lens filter. This creates a richer and more defined look.
Collection: Black and White Presets, Film Presets
Best for: Outdoor, Landscapes, Cityscapes, Urban Spaces, Street Photography
Style: Brilliant, Wide Tonal Range
This effect is versatile for any type of photography. The preset’s brilliance and wide tonal range can be used on portraits, landscapes, and even street photography. If you are looking for a vintage film filter with stunning tones, this is the monochrome preset to go for. You can use it for professional photography or even your everyday Instagram posts.
Intensifies and Brightens Tones
Vibrant Tones. The preset begins by switching the processing to black and white mode. It then proceeds to fully enhance the image in monochrome. It begins by broadening the range of tones. As seen in the example above, B&W Orange Filter boosts contrast. The effect is noticeable in the improved intensity and tonal range.
To complement this look, the preset lightens shadows as well. This will compensate for any harshness caused by the heightened contrast. Then, to make textures more visible and go with the overall bold look, B&W Orange Filter amplifies sharpening as well.
All these fundamental effects come together to reinvent the retro film look. Even in the absence of color, this black and white preset is able to produce enough dramatic tones that transform the mood.
Converts Orange Hues to Brilliant Grays
Brilliant Orange. To simulate the look that only an orange lens filter can produce, the preset maxes out the luminance of orange tones in the black and white mix channel. This means that orange tones would become brilliant grays when converted to monochrome.
This is, therefore, ideal for portraits because of its effect on skin tones. You can also notice this targeted brightening on objects that have a tinge of orange, like the beach sand in the After photo above. It is now in a luminous bright white. See how this is a striking contrast against the darkened sky.
Produces Contrasting Tones
Deep Blues. Another distinct effect of the filter can be observed at the opposite end of the color wheel: the blue hues. An orange lens filter, after all, has an inverse effect on its complementary color. It turns blues into deep grays, or even inky blacks, in monochrome.
You can easily notice this in the example above. Simply examine how the B&W Orange Filter converts the sky into grayscale. It is now nearly black, making the white clouds look more dramatic and stand out. It serves as a nice background for various scenes, like in the urban photo above.
The preset refines this look by further tweaking the colors in the black and white mix channels. To retain the vibrant tones and stark contrast, it also lowers the luminance of cool hues.
Vivid Outdoors. You can make the most of these fine mix channel adjustments when using this preset on outdoor photos. B&W Orange Filter would look even more stunning if your image has both warm and cool hues.
You can examine the After photo above, for example. See how the preset brightens skin tones (because of the orange hues) and sets it apart against the predominantly blue background. B&W Orange Filter expertly transforms them into well-defined contrasting grays.
