Vivid Red

Vivid Red is a free Lightroom preset that makes red tones pop as it grays out all other colors. Its reds are deep and rich, high in contrast and saturation. This bold and artistic style fully draws attention to the subject of the image.

Collection: Red Presets
Best for: Photos with red accents on subjects or foreground objects
Style: Accentuated reds, unsaturated colors

This effect works best on photos with either a lot of red hues or a subject that is mostly in red. Given its lighting adjustments, you can apply this filter on photos taken both indoors and outdoors. It is a preset that is fun to experiment with! Try it as an Instagram filter. Its unique look will absolutely make your photo stand out from the rest.

Intensifies Colors

Bold Hues. To produce stunning reds, the preset applies a medium contrast tone curve, boosts clarity, and slightly increases exposure. You can see the result above: the After image now has strong midtones and an overall bright scene. These initial adjustments serve as the foundation of succeeding tweaks in color and tone.

Take note of the intensified reds in the photo, too. The background looks more vibrant, and the watermelon so fresh and juicy. See also how Vivid Red affects the skin tone of the subject. More on this complex adjustments later.

Brightens All Tones

Bright Tones. Vivid Red further brightens whites and highlights, as you can easily see in the above example. This complements the grayed-out colors: in the photo above of a man climbing the mountain, see how the bluish snow is now in brilliant white. Given this light effect, and to not produce harsh and dark tones, the preset also mutes blacks and shadows.

These settings, therefore, make sure that the tones match the drawn-out reds. Whites are just as intense, while the blacks are soft and subdued.

Draws Out Red and Orange, Grays Out All Other Colors

In Red. This is where the bulk of the preset’s effect is created. Its tweaks on individual color saturation pull out colors red and orange, then grays out everything else. After all, fully desaturating colors does turn them into gray.

If your photo has colors other than red in the background, as is usually the case for wildlife and landscape photos, you will get a result similar to the one above. The monochrome background creates a dramatic look, especially if your subject is in red. This works incredibly well on portraits, too, considering how the preset also improves skin tones.

Moderates the Intensity of Warm Colors

Vivid Warmth. Although the primary focus of this preset is the red color, it also partially brings out oranges — but not as intense. The orange hues here serve to complement the reds, and is most useful in skin tones. To create this effect, Vivid Red, therefore, moderately lowers the saturation of orange, and of course, increases that of red.

Enhances Skin Tones

Radiant Portraits. Thanks to the inherent red and orange hues in skin tones, the preset does a great job of maintaining and enhancing them. Vivid Red increases the luminance of red and orange, complementing the saturation adjustments previously discussed.

You can examine the woman’s portrait above for the result. See how her skin looks brighter and more complex. Plus, with the monochrome background and her red uniform, the focus is now completely on her.
