Moderates Color Intensity

Sunset Mood. There is some tenderness in sunsets and the colors they produce. The preset recreates this feel by moderating color intensity. First, it improves the sunlit warmth in images by increasing the color temperature. From this, it amplifies hues by increasing clarity, vibrance, and a bit of contrast.

Note that the colors keep their soft effect. This is because Sunset Bay reduces their overall saturation. You can see in the above example that the preset balances these intensity adjustments to keep things looking natural.

Softens Light and Dark Areas of the Image

Compressed Tones. The preset’s compressed tones partly produce the soft look that it is known for. They are both light and bright; there are no intense bright or dark areas. It begins by lessening the brilliance of whites and the harshness of blacks.

You can examine the effect on the above After photo. The most noticeable difference is the sky and sea. They look slightly more muted in tone but retain their rich colors. The sky is less brilliant, as if the sun is closer to the horizon. The water’s tender aqua hues now complement the pastel orange sky. Draw your attention, too, to the rocks. Because of its brightening of dark areas, the preset reveals more details.

Diffuses Light in Tones

Diffused Light. The overall effect of Sunset Bay’s tonal adjustments gives an impression of a more diffused light. This is after all, the case for sunsets. As a result, there are no overblown highlights or harsh shadows. The preset does this by softening both extremities.

You can also notice in the After photo how the shadows look accentuated. To give them a soft yet complementary look, the preset adds an olive green tint. This makes sure that even the dark tones meld well with Sunset Bay’s motif. You can observe the result in the waves above: note the greenish shadows and how they blend well with the aqua sea. This makes sunsets over the ocean even more captivating.

Creates its Pastel Motif in Hue, Saturation, and Luminance

Pastel Hues. It is in Lightroom’s HSL panel where the bulk of Sunset Bay’s pastel sunset motif is created. It transforms several colors under Hue: it makes warm colors more orange, cool colors more aqua.

After setting the corresponding shades, it intensifies and deepens cool colors by tweaking their saturation and luminance accordingly. On the other hand, it lightens and deepens the warm colors that which suffuse the twilit sky.
