You can use this monochrome look across all types of photography. As it simulates a low ISO of 200, this preset works best on illuminated scenes, especially outdoors. Because of its moderate ISO, you can expect some fine film grain. Resulting images still get a smooth look without too much noise.
Recreates the Classic Monochrome Look
Classic Film. The preset creates its authentic film look by first switching to black and white mode in Lightroom. This allows it to more finely adjust tones, than by simply muting saturation.
It then sets the ISO 200 effect by increasing the exposure and contrast accordingly. You get bright whites as a result, as you can see in the After photo above. These are further refined later on.
To complete the Neopan 200 look, the preset adds some grain. It is enough to recreate the effect without distorting any of the photo's elements.
Tip: If the resulting image is too bright, try tweaking the exposure levels.
As you can see in the example above, the effect of these adjustments is ideal for portraits. It helps smoothen skin tones and illuminate the subject's face. We get to see more of her expression now, as a result. There are no harsh, obtrusive, shadows to mask facial features.
Notice how the overall brightening also affects the mood of the photograph. There is now a lighter and more inviting feel. You can play around with this look especially if you have white or high-key backgrounds, like the photo above.
Reinforces Tones for Depth
Complex Grays. Neopan 200 preset further refines its tonal settings in the tone curve. Here, it darkens blacks further and moderates the brilliance of light regions. As you can see in the After photo above, the black and white image now has more grays to define the elements. After all, in the absence of colors, it is important to have a wide range of gray tones.
Defined Elements. Examine the photo more closely to see how the preset processes tones. Look at the more defined folds on the woman's dress, the bike, and the leaves in the background. Notice how the grays help with the overall depth and definition.
Refines Luminance Levels
Light Levels. Neopan 200 preset applies more complex settings to its tones by tweaking the black and white mix channel. This allows it to individually set the intensity and brightness of tones, based on their corresponding colors.
It amplifies the luminance levels of red, purple, magenta, and blue, at varying levels. These group of enhancements primarily affect skin tones, warm-toned terrains, blue skies, and bodies of water. They would appear somewhat brighter than the rest of the image.
In contrast, Neopan 200 decreases the luminance levels of yellow, green, and aqua. This means that their respective grays would look dark and deep. The result, therefore, is most noticeable in landscapes, as you can see in the example above. You would get deep and rich grays for lush green fields, trees, plants, and some areas of sky and water as well.
