Adds Texture and Grain

Backpacker. The Silver Screen preset, decreases highlights and whites in its light settings. This helps out reveal more subtle detail and texture. This adjustment is also hand in hand with the preset adding grain and sharpness to achieve a textured, grainy overall look.

The images above show how these adjustments appear once the preset is applied to the photo. Look at the Before photo, notice how the photo is very smooth and silky. The texture is not at all evident, even the naturally textured parts such as the man’s beard and hair appears very soft and smooth. Now, turning to the After photo, it is quickly noticeable how grain is present. From the background to the man’s skin tone, hair, beard, and clothes, everything is now textured. Specks of gray, black, and white are exposed, bringing out that grainy vintage look on the image.

Vivid Expressions. Just like the previous image, the example above shows how the preset adds texture and grain to its images. Looking closely, you can see how the background of the woman becomes textured and grainy. Her facial features are very sharp and clear with clean lines, but also has evident specks of gray. Her hair is now also a lighter shade from the Before image also projecting a faded look. These effects give an overall old film look in the image.

Applies Neopan 400 Tone Curve

Classic Portraits. The Silver Screen Preset applies the Fujifilm Neopan 400 film tone curve to its settings. This enables the preset to capture a similar clarity and brightness that the Fujifilm Neopan 400 film produces. The photo above shows this since, in the After photo, you can see how the overall image has clean, bright, well-balanced black and white tones that resemble the Fujifilm Neopan 400 film. Even if the processed image has a lot of texture present, the lighting and tonal balance overall are very clean, sharp, and bright bringing out that retro image charm.

Creates Evident Contrasts

Vivid Tones. The preset reduces highlights and increases darks and shadows. This helps bring out darker elements in your image creating more evident contrasts. The After photo above is a good example of this. If you look closely, you can see that the windows and doors on the walls are seen with darker pigments creating pockets of contrasts all over the image. The lack of highlights and the added grain also helps to bring out texture throughout the image. Overall, these custom adjustments complete the classic look of black and white analog photography.
