Produces Bright and Mid-Contrast Tones

Bright and Rich. For the monochrome treatment, Detailed Matte preset switches to black and white mode in Lightroom. For here, it sets some fundamental adjustments: it adds light by increasing exposure and deepens tones with a bit of contrast.

This preset does not overexpose nor heighten contrast exceedingly. You do not need to worry about losing details over blown highlights and too inky shadows; these two are delicately balanced, as you will see in the next example.

Applies Thorough Adjustments in Tone

Balanced Softness. It is easy to notice the bright yet soft tones in the After photo. The effect is undeniably matte, or even silky. This is one of the characteristic charms of the Detailed Matte preset.

To create this signature look, it mutes some highlights and lightens some shadows even in the tone curve. You can think of it as a well-rounded softening; these adjustments help reveal more details in the photograph, as you can observe in the example above.

The preset, of course, also have the midtones covered. It adds depth and definition to these by increasing clarity. Just look at the woman’s coffee cup, her jeans, and the surface of the structure behind her.

Finely Adjusts Color Luminance in the B&W Mix Channels

Cool Monochrome. Good monochrome photos tend to evoke stronger emotions than colored images, especially if you portraying a specific emotion or atmosphere. The absence of color allows the spectator to focus on other visual details instead, like shape, lines, and texture.

The black and white treatment does, however, depend on broad grayscale tones; thus, even if you do not see the colors, you can have a subtle impression of coolness and warmth. For this, Detailed Matte increases the luminance of blue and purple; you can therefore see this effect the most in midtones, bodies of water, and vast skies. In contrast, it mutes warm tones including green and aqua. The result that you get will therefore always look soft and cool.

Adds Texture and Drama

Crisp Textures. The Detailed Matte preset stays true to its name: it produces detailed textures with an increase in sharpening. This works well on its softened tones, given how the brightening also reveals some subtle elements.

Let us examine the After photo above of a woman at the beach. Notice how you can see the lines of her fingers more clearly now; even with the shallow depth of field, the woman’s skirt also appears sharper.

Finally, the preset adds vignette to frame the scene. Not only does it draw your attention to the subject, but it also helps heighten tones and the overarching drama. All in all, the effects of this classic film filter come together to enhance your photos, from casual Instagram uploads to professional photoshoots.
